After the fact is never a good time to learn that what you assumed simply isn’t so. That’s especially true when the topic is business insurance. As a small business owner, you’ve got enough on your plate keeping your company afloat in today’s tough economy. You don’t need added expenses or liabilities because of inadequate business owners policy insurance coverage. It’s always sound practice to review your existing insurance policies at least annually, or whenever your business experiences a significant change.  You may be surprised to learn that what you thought was under control isn’t. Apr 10, 2010

Just like snowflakes, no two small businesses are exactly alike. That’s why, in the wide world of Business Owners’ Policies (BOPs), you’ll find lots of add-on options to supplement your standard BOP property and commercial general liability (CGL) coverage. Depending on where you live and the type of small business you operate, you may want to ante up the extra premium for one or more of these BOP extensions and endorsements.

Imagine what would happen to your business if your accounts receivables were destroyed or stolen? Pretty hard to collect what you can’t remember you billed. While i

A bad credit rating can really mess up your life and turn into a snowballing nightmare. Imagine this scenario: when everybody else was getting awesome finance rates on new cars, you had to pay several percentage points more on your loan – a likely scenario if you financed through the dealership. Then you went shopping for auto insurance quotes but your crummy credit marked you as a poor risk, so you ended up with a high-priced policy. All this put a strain on your budget, so you missed a few car payments and your credit got worse. Before it goes that far, consider refinancing your high-priced ride. T

Here Comes Spring. Got Flood Insurance?

After winter’s record-breaking snow storms, most of the Midwest and parts of the East Coast are bracing for massive melts and widespread flooding. Most standard homeowner’s insurance policies do not include flood insurance or cover damages from flood water.  You need a separate rider or a single-peril flood insurance policy.

The Farmers Almanac predicts that April and May 2010 will be much warmer than usual, meaning when the thaw comes, it will come fast.  But if you don’t put much stock in old fashion weather prediction, consider that the Wall Street Journal is reporting that grain traders added 25 cents to the price of a bushel of soybeans in anticipation of a delayed spring planting season. Small Business Insurance Protection from Electronic Fraud and Theft

You wouldn’t close shop for the night without locking up tight. You’d never leave the cash registered open and unattended. But failing to protect your small business’s bank account from hackers and fraudulent electronic fund transfers puts you at even more risk. The FBI claims to have investigated over 200 cases of illegal Internet-enabled ACH (automated clearing house) and wire transfers between 2008 and 2009, totaling about $100 million, according to a report in USA Today.  Insurance companies offer extensions to their standard business owners’ policies (BOPs) to help small businesses cover losses from computer and funds transfer fraud; but most place dollar caps per incident on the coverage.  Even so, it’s probably a smart investment if you rely heavily on electronic banking (and who doesn’t these days). Is Whole Life Insurance a Good Investment?

Apr 10, 2010

Good is a relative term, but given recent market volatility, the melt-down of 401Ks and the down-right miserable performance of interest-bearing accounts, some people are rethinking whole life insurance as a more secure place to park their money. Although whole life fell out of favor in the 1980s with the advent of mutual funds, sales of whole life insurance policies during the second half of 2009 were up 12% from the previous year, while term life sales remained flat.

The C-word – Cancer – is one of the most dreaded words in the English language. Whether it be someone you know, yourself or even your cat or dog, it is never welcome.

Putting the emotional aspect of cancer aside (as if that is at all possible), the financial cost of cancer treatment is very high.

Looking back on all the cancer claims we have had in the last few years, the costs range from a very low end of $3,000 to the high end of $17,000 and vary on the type of cancer, the aggressiveness of the treatment and the location of the treatment (California and New York city are particularly expensive).

Embrace policies cover cancer up to your annual maximum as long as your pet has not had cancer before you bought your policy nor shown any clinical signs of cancer.

This month, we are going to explore the health topic of cancer in cats and dogs.
