Cornwall police are running a series of operations to crack down on speeding car insurance policyholders in the region.

Over the course of the year, they will conduct nine Operation Slowdowns in different locations across Cornwall to catch car insurance policyholders who ignore speed restrictions.

They will be pulled over and given the choice of accepting the usual fine and penalty points on their licences or spending 15 minutes at a nearby location, where they will be given an educational session on the consequences of speeding.

Operation Slowdown is a joint initiative between Cornwall Council Road Safety Unit, Devon and Cornwall Constabulary and the Safety Camera Partnership.

“One collision is one too many and we’re doing everything we can to make our roads safer,” said Graeme Hicks, Cornwall Council cabinet member for Transportation and Highways.

Meanwhile, residents in West Berkshire are to be trained to monitor car insurance policyholders as part of the Speedwatch initiative.

MCI calls on next govt to sort out biker training for motor insurance holders

The Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI) has called on the next government to change the Driving Standards Agency’s management of training of motor insurance policyholders.

Together with its partner, Riders Are Voters, it highlighted the need for there to be a proper partnership between the motorcycle community and the government on testing and licensing policy.

The two organisations said that motor insurance policyholders, trainers and the industry need to be part of the policymaking process.

Steve Kenward, MCI’s chief executive, said: “The seemingly unresolved issues of accessing and booking tests, is still causing massive problems for trainers and is ultimately reducing the number of riders coming forward for tests.”

He added that this was adding “cost and inconvenience” for motor insurance policyholders.

A recent survey by the MCI found that the UK motorcycle industry has a significant impact on the British economy, creating annual net sales of £5.2 billion.

Car insurance: Speed bumps ’cause long-term damage to roads’

Speed humps are causing long-term damage to both car insurance policyholders’ vehicles and UK roads, according to an expert.

Motoring guru Honest John said that various parts of vehicles are being harmed by the bumps, in particular the tyres and suspension.

In addition, the areas surrounding speed humps are also taking a pounding, he claimed, adding to the costs for councils that are already under pressure to make savings.

A recent survey by Exchange and Mart found that nearly two-thirds of people believe Labour’s pledge of £100 million to repair roads for car insurance policyholders is not enough.

“Any vehicle that mounts a speed hump sends shockwaves through the ground, damaging the substructure of the road and potentially even buildings and walls in close proximity,” Honest John explained.

He added that UK building regulators had also recognised the damage speed humps can do, by requiring that they are not placed within 25 metres of bridges, subways or tunnels.

Green vehicles marketed to car insurance holders as cheaper to run

Car insurance policyholders are buying green vehicles not because they are environmentally conscious but because they are cheaper to run, according to an expert.

Will Powell of Cleangreencars.co.uk said that manufacturers are now marketing eco-friendly models to people as the cheapest to run.

He insisted that green cars are still popular with car insurance policyholders.

“The Prius is a popular [green] car with a really strong image, even though small diesel powered cars tend to actually do better in terms of CO2 emissions,” he added.

Mr Powell said that there was no difference between environmentally friendly cars and ordinary vehicles in terms of reliability, although they tend to be more expensive.

Recent research by Carmony.co.uk found that environmental concerns are at the bottom of the list for car insurance policyholders when considering what vehicles to buy.

According to the survey, 84 per cent believe price is the deciding factor when purchasing.

Hispania Racing Team (HRT) have signed former Jaguar racer Christian Klien as a second test and reserve driver.

He will drive in Friday’s opening Barcelona practice session for the team, supporting the race drivers Karun Chandhok and Bruno Senna.

Klien said he was “thrilled” to be joining the team, which also took on Sakon Yamamoto as a reserve driver last month.

“This role offers me the opportunity to rejoin the Formula One environment and drive again, which is naturally where my longer-term ambitions lie,” Klien added.

The Austrian has previously worked as a Formula One test driver at Honda in 2007, prior to a brief stint at Spyker and Force India, before being part of the BMW Sauber team in 2008 and 2009.

His maiden season of F1 competition was with Jaguar Racing in 2004, when he was just 27.

Meanwhile, the F1 racers are gearing up for the next grand prix in Barcelona this weekend, with Jenson Button going into the race as championship leader.

Over 300 car insurance holders caught speeding in week-long campaign

More than 300 car insurance policyholders were caught speeding during a police operation in Oxfordshire last week.

The effort was part of a European-wide campaign of enforcement and education as to the dangers of speeding.

Checks were carried out by road safety constable Mark Pilling, who worked alongside roads policing officers from Abingdon and Bicester traffic bases.

In total, 315 speed offences by car insurance policyholders were detected and processed.

“It is concerning that a large number of drivers continue to ignore road safety messages and believe it is acceptable to exceed the speed limit,” commented PC Pilling.

He added that a great number of checks were done in residential and built-up areas, including some near schools.

The most culprits in one day were detected on Burford Road in Witney, where 42 speeding offences were recorded between 11:00 and 14:00 BST.

Cornwall police recently announced that they are to run a series of operations to crack down on drivers going over the limit in the region.
