The training of motor insurance policyholders should be the long-term goal for the motorcycle licensing regime and not arbitrary tests, according the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI).
It made the statement as the government announced new measures on rider testing, training, examination and licensing which are being introduced as a result of European regulations.
These include a requirement for novice motor insurance policyholders to take tests at every stage of the ‘progressive access’ route to gaining a license for large bikes.
MCI said that the proposed measures still fall short of the necessary requirements for making a real improvement to motorcycle safety.
“Although we recognise that the government intends to go down the testing route for now, industry still believes that a training based route to a full license should be considered the longer term goal,” said Steve Kenward, chief executive of MCI.
The organisation recently warned motor insurance policyholders getting their bikes out after the winter months to ensure they are fully prepared for the roads.
