Hispania Racing Team (HRT) have signed former Jaguar racer Christian Klien as a second test and reserve driver.
He will drive in Friday’s opening Barcelona practice session for the team, supporting the race drivers Karun Chandhok and Bruno Senna.
Klien said he was “thrilled” to be joining the team, which also took on Sakon Yamamoto as a reserve driver last month.
“This role offers me the opportunity to rejoin the Formula One environment and drive again, which is naturally where my longer-term ambitions lie,” Klien added.
The Austrian has previously worked as a Formula One test driver at Honda in 2007, prior to a brief stint at Spyker and Force India, before being part of the BMW Sauber team in 2008 and 2009.
His maiden season of F1 competition was with Jaguar Racing in 2004, when he was just 27.
Meanwhile, the F1 racers are gearing up for the next grand prix in Barcelona this weekend, with Jenson Button going into the race as championship leader.
