An extra 1.6 million car insurance policyholders have serviced their own vehicles over the past year due to economic worries, according to new research.
A survey by Kwik-Fit found that 35 per cent of car owners said they carried out a service themselves.
However, 69 per cent of car insurance policyholders admitted that they did not feel confident servicing their own vehicle, which means that 1.25 million cars could have undergone an insufficient repair job.
The research also found that 2.5 million fewer cars were serviced at a garage over the last year, which was mostly as a result of motorists wanting to save money.
“Modern cars are increasingly reliant on computer technology so there are fewer tasks under the bonnet suitable for an amateur enthusiast as they won’t have the necessary equipment,” commented David White, customer services director at Kwik-Fit.
Recent research by fast.MAP on behalf of mytyres.co.uk found that 30 per cent of car insurance policyholders had checked their spare wheel in the last three months.
